About Your Coach

In late 2009- I had graduated with my Bachelors Degree in Journalism. To get through college- I had to take out student loans. At the time, I wasn’t in the position to pay, so my parents offered to help (temporarily), under the assumption that as soon as I had some sort of income, that I would take over the payments. I paid little by little, as I could, but I fell far behind.

By March of 2014, I had graduated from my Masters program, and in addition to graduating, I had gotten married.

Earning her trust as a partner included being open about my finances. I will never forget how I felt that fall when she asked to see my loans. I hesitated, because truly, I didn’t know what number was going to show up- my dad had been running my account, and I would pay him as I could. We logged in and looked- my heart SANK. What a big number!

I panicked. We were still fairly new to our marriage, and all that was running through my head was “What does she think? Is she judging me? What have I brought her in to?” We had discussed that we had loans, but didn’t talk numbers- this was the first time her, and I, were really seeing how far behind I truly was.

I went to bed anxious. I woke up the next day knowing that something had to change. Together, we sat down with a pot of coffee and said “Let’s get this done. We are one team always and forever. And you know what? When we pay these off, we are going to reward ourselves with a trip to Hawaii.”

That day changed me- from then on, I meticulously managed my finances- reading, listening to interviews, and consulting others who knew more than I in order to build my finance and coaching skills.

Fast forward to the present day, and I can say that my finances are completely steady. I'm able to breathe- I feel secure about my family’s future, because WE are in control. We still haven’t taken that trip to Hawaii, but it hasn’t happened because we’re now raising two kids (not because we haven’t budgeted for it).
